Taiamai's Best

Taiamai's Best is a NZ heritage apple variety from the Koanga Institute collection, named for the Taiamai area of Northland — a historically significant district in the Bay of Islands region with deep Māori roots and a long history of early European settlement and farming. Taiamai (near present-day Ohaeawai) was one of the earliest areas of sustained settlement in NZ, and fruit growing has been part of its agricultural history since the mid-1800s. The 'Best' in the name reflects the tradition of selecting and naming the finest individual apple from a local area — Taiamai's Best was considered the outstanding apple of its district. Fruit characteristics are not formally documented in public records. Seedling grown at Koanga; all Koanga apple seedlings are organically grown (OG). Requires a pollinator. Available from Koanga Institute.
