Surprise

Surprise is a fascinating heritage apple with a remarkable distinction: pink-fleshed fruit. Smallish and round with pale green to whitish-yellow skin, the tart red-tinged flesh is a genuine surprise when cut open. A very old variety descended from Malus niedzwetskyana, a deeply pigmented Central Asian wild apple — it is the ancestor of many modern pink and red-fleshed apple varieties now being bred internationally. Of historical significance to apple breeders. Available from Koanga Institute.
