Splendour

Splendour is a NZ-bred apple that originated as a chance seedling near Napier in 1948. It produces large, carmine-red fruit with yellowish, fine-grained, crisp flesh that is sweet and very low in acid. One of Splendour's defining qualities is its ability to hang on the tree without dropping, extending the harvest window considerably. The fruit also develops a honeyed flavour in storage and keeps well over winter. Initially trialled commercially but found too thin-skinned for large-scale transport, it is now a prized home garden variety. Slow to bear but high yielding once established, with good resistance to fire blight. A tip and spur bearing variety requiring a mid-late season pollinator.
