Royal Gala

Royal Gala is a New Zealand-bred apple and one of the most successful varieties ever to come out of this country. Discovered in NZ in 1969 as a red sport of Gala, it was named in honour of Queen Elizabeth II who declared it her favourite during a visit to New Zealand. Royal Gala produces medium-sized fruit with distinctive red-orange striping over a yellow background and fine-textured, creamy, sweet and juicy flesh. An early-to-mid season variety, harvesting from February to March in NZ, it is a prolific, reliable cropper that is not biennial. Tip bearing and suitable for most NZ growing regions. Self-fertile, though crops will improve with a nearby mid-season pollinator.
