Renown (Macadamia)

Renown is a macadamia hybrid (Macadamia integrifolia × M. tetraphylla) with a notably spreading tree habit. One of the highest-yielding macadamia varieties — commercially, 17kg per tree has been recorded from 9-year-old trees. A practical advantage for home orchardists is that Renown's nuts drop naturally to the ground when ripe, making harvesting easier than with Beaumont (which must be picked). The shell is relatively thick and the kernel flavour is mild rather than rich. An early-harvesting variety in NZ, ripening April to May. Takes 4–5 years to first fruit. Grows to 6m×4m. Best cross-pollinated with another macadamia variety. Important: macadamias are toxic to dogs.
