Pouto River

Pouto River is a small white-fleshed NZ heirloom peach with green skin and red blush, freestone, sweet and reliable with good flavour. A Pouto variant of the River Peach — similar to the ancient peaches of Nepal and genetically stable. From a public beach at Pouto on the Kaipara Harbour, with remarkable history: during World War II, women on Kaipara farms rowed these peaches to Helensville to sell at Auckland markets. An extraordinary piece of NZ food heritage. Self-fertile. Heavy cropper. Ripe late January to early February. Available from Koanga Institute.
