Pecan (Carya Illinionensis)

Pecan (Carya illinoinensis) is a large, majestic deciduous tree producing the beloved pecan nut — rich, buttery flavour, excellent eaten fresh, in cooking, pastries and the famous pecan pie. Pecans require a long, warm growing season to ripen properly — best suited to the warmer NZ regions (Northland, Bay of Plenty, Hawke's Bay, Nelson/Marlborough). Can take 6–10 years before first crop but then produces abundantly for decades. Cross-pollination improves yields. Available from specialist NZ nut nurseries.
