Matakana Golden Russet

Matakana Golden Russet is a NZ heritage apple with beautiful golden-russet skin and red blush on the sunny side. Round and flattish, with yellow flesh of very rich aromatic flavour — sweet, soft and excellent with cheese. Ripe February to March, but stores well and actually tastes better with keeping. Precocious heavy cropper. From the Matakana area, almost certainly from the original Mathew Bros nursery in the area. One of the great NZ heritage apples. Available from Koanga Institute.
