Lucas (Pecan Carya Lucas)

Lucas is a high quality pecan variety producing consistent yields of thin-shelled, richly flavoured nuts that shell out easily — a proven performer in suitable NZ climates and a popular choice for lifestyle blocks, orchards and larger gardens. Over time it develops into a substantial and attractive shade tree. A Cool cultivar suited to a wide range of NZ regions, performing best where summers are warm and winters mild. Grows to 15m×15m at maturity — allow 10–12m spacing between trees. Prolific bearer, producing crops after 5–7 years. Plant in full sun with deep, fertile, free-draining soil in a warm, sheltered site with good airflow. Water consistently through summer during establishment. Pecans need cross-pollination — Lucas is a compatible pollinator for Hirschi. Deciduous with attractive autumn colour. Available at The Plant Company and specialist NZ nut nurseries.
