Kumquat (Chinotto)

Chinotto (Citrus myrtifolia) is an attractive citrus with aromatic, narrow, myrtle-like foliage. The fragrant citrus blossoms are followed by thick-skinned, bright orange fruit that is very bitter and not eaten fresh — it is primarily used to flavour liqueurs, bitters and the famous Italian carbonated soft drink that shares its name. Excellent for candied fruit and marmalade. Note: despite common grouping with kumquats, Chinotto is botanically a sour orange. Self-fertile. Available from specialist NZ citrus nurseries.
