Karaka Black (Hybrid berry)
Karaka Black is a NZ-bred hybrid berry developed by Plant & Food Research, producing large, glossy black, long, firm berries with excellent flavour. The name references karaka — either the native NZ tree (Corynocarpus laevigatus) or the Karaka district of South Auckland. An early variety, perfect for Christmas harvesting. Important: canes are spiny (thorny), so use gloves when picking. Outstanding fruit quality and early season make it a sought-after variety. Self-fertile. Train on wires or a trellis. Available at Wairere and specialist NZ berry nurseries.
