Hawera

Hawera is a NZ plum variety discovered as a chance seedling growing on the roadside near Hawera, Taranaki — one of the most reliably productive of the locally discovered NZ plums. Produces large, dark red fruit with very firm, dark red flesh and good sweet flavour. A heavy, reliable cropper with an upright habit growing to 5m×3m. Freestone. Partially self-fertile — benefits from another variety nearby for heavier crops. Ripens January. Available at Wairere, Greenleaf and Leafland Nurseries.
