Hachiya (Persimmon)

Hachiya is the classic astringent persimmon variety — large, acorn-shaped or heart-shaped fruit with deep orange skin. Must be fully soft and jelly-like before eating; if eaten unripe, the strong astringency makes the mouth pucker. But when fully ripe, the flesh is extraordinarily sweet and rich — like eating spiced honey. Excellent for baking, smoothies and drying. Self-fertile. Available at The Plant Company.
