Devonshire Quarrenden

Devonshire Quarrenden is one of England's oldest apple varieties, first recorded in 1678 and thought to have originated in Devon. A popular early-season dessert apple in Victorian England, it produces small to medium-sized, distinctly flat fruit with a greenish-yellow background almost entirely flushed dark crimson. The white flesh is crisp, juicy and refreshingly sweet-tart with a distinctive strawberry-like flavour, though this note can vary with picking time. A parent of Worcester Pearmain, it is one of the earliest apples to ripen in New Zealand, but does not keep and is best eaten straight from the tree.
