Cox's Orange Pippin

Cox's Orange Pippin is widely regarded as one of the finest dessert apples ever grown, bred in England in the 1820s by Richard Cox. It produces small to medium-sized fruit with a greenish-yellow base overlaid with orange-red blush and striping, and some russet. The flesh is fine-grained, crisp and very juicy with a complex, aromatic flavour combining sweetness, nuttiness and a pleasantly tangy edge. One of only two countries where Cox is grown commercially in significant quantities is New Zealand, where it ripens early to mid-season from February to March. A moderate cropper, partially self-fertile, but produces better crops with a pollinator nearby.
