Castanea Sativa (Sweet Chestnut)

Castanea sativa (Sweet Chestnut) is a large, long-lived deciduous tree producing delicious edible chestnuts in autumn — one of the most impressive food-producing trees for NZ lifestyle blocks, orchards and spacious gardens. Well suited to NZ conditions including coastal sites. The cream-green catkin flowers appear in summer and are attractive in their own right. Prefers a sunny position with deep, fertile, slightly acidic, well-draining soil. Grows 15–25m tall with a spread of 10–15m at maturity — allow plenty of space. Low maintenance once established; young trees benefit from regular watering in dry weather. Cross-pollination with another Castanea variety is essential for reliable nut set. Chestnuts are excellent roasted, boiled, dried and used in festive cooking and stuffings.
