Butler

Butler is a highly productive hazelnut variety producing large, round, sweet-flavoured nuts — one of the larger-nutted hazelnut varieties, with good quality kernels. A mid to late-season variety and a short-husked type that de-husks freely when ripe, making harvest easier. Does well in most areas of New Zealand, forming an open bush of moderate vigour. Hazelnuts are a cross-pollinating species and require another variety for reliable nut set — plant with Ennis or Campanica as a pollinator. Deciduous shrub to 3–4m. Harvest February to March when nuts fall naturally. High in protein and beneficial unsaturated fats. Available from specialist NZ nut nurseries.
