Bing

Bing is one of the most famous sweet cherry varieties in the world, originating in Oregon, USA in 1875 and named after a Chinese orchard worker, Ah Bing. It produces large, firm, heart-shaped cherries with deep mahogany-red to nearly black skin and sweet, richly flavoured dark red flesh. A vigorous and heavy cropping variety, Bing is highly regarded for fresh eating. Not self-fertile, requiring a pollinator, with suitable varieties including Lapins, Rainier or Stella. Ripens mid-season in NZ, typically in late December.
