Ben Mapua

Ben Mapua is a NZ-bred black currant variety — the name reflects its NZ origin, Mapua being a locality in the Nelson/Tasman region. A very heavy-cropping variety with vigorous, spreading growth habit, producing balanced, acid-sweet flavoured berries. NZ-bred black currant varieties tend to perform particularly well in NZ conditions. Self-fertile. Deciduous bush to 1.5m. Excellent for jam, cordial, health drinks and fresh eating. Available at Wairere, Greenleaf and specialist NZ berry nurseries.
