A heritage apple, originating in Australia,'Ballarat' dates back to 1870. It produces large apples that are ripe towards the end of April. The apples are pale green with blush red tinge and the juicy creamy flesh is lovely and juicy. A good choice for a cooking apple (cooking down to a nice puree). It is also is an excellent keeper, Ballarat apples were traditionally often stored up to six months without refrigeration.
