Alkmene
'Alkmene,' also known as 'Early Windsor,' is a distinguished German cultivar of domesticated apple. This variety was developed by the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute in Müncheberg, Germany, sometime between 1900 and 1949. It is the result of a cross between two esteemed cultivars: 'Cox's Orange Pippin' and 'Duchess of Oldenburg.' The outcome is an early mid-season apple that is both visually appealing and delicious. The 'Alkmene' apple boasts a honeyed flavor similar to 'Cox's,' but with a slightly sharper taste, making it perfect for fresh eating.
This variety flowers in the early mid-season, producing self-fertile blossoms that do not require cross-pollination. The fruit is medium-sized and varies somewhat in dimensions. The flesh is distinctly yellowish, sometimes even exceptionally yellow for an apple. Its skin presents a greenish-yellow background adorned with an orange-reddish flush and striking red stripes. 'Alkmene' is known for its resistance to apple scab, although it is susceptible to blossom frost.
In recognition of its exceptional qualities, 'Alkmene' was awarded the prestigious Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society in 1998.
