Akane
Akane is an early-season Japanese apple — a cross between Worcester Pearmain and Jonathan developed at the Morioka Experimental Station in Japan in the 1930s. Also known as Tokyo Rose. The two parents make for an interesting combination: Worcester Pearmain contributes the early season and flavour style, while Jonathan adds the balanced sweet-sharp character. Produces flattish, bright red fruit with creamy white flesh that has good juice and a pleasantly balanced sweet-tart flavour. The flesh resists browning when cut — useful for salads and lunchboxes. Good disease resistance including to scab and powdery mildew. Fruit hangs well on the tree over a long picking window. Best eaten fresh as it doesn't store well. Requires a pollinator.
